Tennis: Australian Open
The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually in Melbourne Park. It is the first of four Grand Slams held throughout the year, the others being The US Open, The French Open and Wimbledon. The 2024 tournament runs from January 14 to 28, with the total prize money sitting at AUD$86.5 million.
Winners of the tournament are awarded by having their name inscribed on trophies - the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup for men's singles and for women, the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup. Winners also receive 2000 points towards their ATP (men's) and WTA (women's) rankings. Prize money is awarded equally to male and female players as follows: Winner - $3.15 million, Second place - $1.725 million, Semi-final - $990,000, Quarter-final - $600,000.
While many tennis legends have competed at the Grand Slam tournament, Novak Djokovic stands above the rest, winning the Australian Open nine times, with Serena Williams as the only player coming close to this feat with seven Australian Open titles for the women's singles event.
